Block Printing is one of the oldest styles of printmaking, used for thousands of years on paper and fabric alike.
During this workshop you will design & carve your very own "block" for printing on Kraft paper and gift tags.
You'll learn how to transfer images, design your own, and gain an introduction to the different kinds of supplies and tools that can be used in this exciting process.
Participants can expect to create & carve at least one unique block and leave with original prints on various paper sheets & gift tags and take their stamp home to use over and over!

Tactile Talisman Workshop
Winter is a time when many cultures celebrate ancestors and departed loved ones, and magic is in the air. Talismans have been part of every tradition to keep magic, health, or special inspiration close. They are believed to provide hope and encouragement through difficult times, or bring good luck.
Boro Patchwork / Sashiko Embroidery Panel Workshop
A fantastic way to ease your mind, calm your breath and focus on what’s at hand. Stitching together is a balm, proven to be great for your health and mental well-bring. Participants will be introduced to two special techniques in this workshop: Boro patchwork and Sashiko stitching.
Join creative teacher, Molly, for a workshop where you will learn about the traditional Boro patchwork style and the basics of creating your own version of this lovely hand-stitched history. Boro (“scraps” or “rags”) patchwork, once a means for survival of textiles dating back to 17th Century Japan has become an exquisitely appreciated art form that continues as a waste- not-want-not textile gathering.
Fabric Memoir Workshop
Based on vintage linen folding maps, in this workshop, students will create a folding fabric book that holds the dearest treasures. Beginning with a “blank page” (linen/hemp fabric), we’ll cut and sew and collage; we’ll age book pages and create missives to build a story on individual fabric squares, each one then hand-sewn into your book. We’ll explore different stitches that can be applied on each square.
This is a process-oriented workshop, wherein students will develop their book intuitively by selecting, arranging and putting all the parts together. Sorting through vintage ephemera, either personal or teacher-provided, while we discuss both improvisational and dedicated design concepts to approaching their finished piece.
Weaving Workshop
Weaving, one of humans’ oldest crafts, is still “transversing a set of parallel threads at right angles.” Learning the concepts of the warp and the weft are a particular craft elevated to an art. As with any media, weaving demands an understanding of the interaction between medium and process which then develops into form.
Learning to cultivate a color sense and design discipline, as well as exploring different shapes and patterns will be covered in this workshop. Participants will learn the basic concepts while using paper and then will build their own mini-loom to continue weaving with yarn, fabric and objects from nature. A wonderful goal in getting the most out of weaving is accessing a ‘weavers mind’.

Come be part of The Word Barn's monthly jam session that is welcome and open to all levels and all instruments. Green Heron fiddler Betsy Heron will led the session through a variety of folk and traditional tunes, and give you the chance to share some of your own (if you want).

Cyanotype: Explorations in Blue & Beyond
Building on the skills of the previously held cyanotype workshop, this workshop will focus on photographic imagery, using vintage glass negatives I’ve collected in France over the years.
Students also have an opportunity, before the workshop begins, to create one of their own photos into a negative image that can be printed in cyan. In this workshop, we will also explore toning our prints in a variety of solutions, which will leave us with imagery in multiple color ways.
European Water Marbling
Whether you’ve tried suminigashi or not, you’ll want to dive into these very different vats of floating inks!
This ancient mono-printing process involves floating acrylic pigment on the surface of thickened (“sized”) water to create patterns which can then be transferred onto paper or fabric. We’ll cover the materials and tools and the basics of your set up. We’ll even be making some tools of our own to use in this workshop!
Cyanotype Workshop
Learn to practice the "magic" of this monochrome printing process which produces cyan-blue colored prints. It’s a joyously fun day composing, exposing, and developing ‘photographs’ using this alternative printing process invented in the 1800's.
In this workshop, we will discuss the history of Cyanotypes, create bespoke images with solar- ready material using the same chemical mixture Sir John Herschel invented in 1842 for this camera-less printing process. On this day, students will work with both fabric and paper to make lasting photographic imagery. You'll create works from the natural world inspired by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer, who created her own cyan prints in 1843, and experiment with composition using 3-d objects
The Call To Adventure: an evening of oral storytelling around the fire
Come relax around the Word Barn's fire pit and enjoy an evening of stories with professional storyteller Aly Foy.
Journey with her to the otherworld full of faerie queens, men who turn into crows, and horses who can ride on water, and you'll meet humans and magic folk alike who are striving for adventure and love, and willing to make the leap whether they will return home or not....
Suminagashi Workshop
Suminigashi aka Japanese Paper Marbling is the ancient Japanese technique of decorating paper with inks. It is believed to be the oldest form of marbling, originating in China over 2,000 years ago and practiced in Japan by Shinto priests as early as the 12th century.
Suminagashi (sue-me-NAH-gah-she), which means literally “ink-floating” involves doing just that!
